Futures of CCA

New workshops, classrooms, facilities, and community spaces will connect students and disciplines in a vibrant, state-of-the-art environment for art, design, and education.

Rooted in the Bay Area, building toward the future

CCA is the action-oriented art and design school in San Francisco. We've helped shape the Bay Area cultural landscape for nearly 120 years, and our expanded campus, which will be completed this fall 2024, will add 82,305 square feet of space to teach, make, and present art. The new addition brings together more than 30 academic programs and disciplines, student housing and dining, and interdisciplinary learning on one campus in San Francisco's burgeoning art and design district. Architecture, design, art, and writing students learn together in the city's most exciting cultural neighborhood, alongside galleries, design studios, and technology companies.

A long-term vision comes to fruition

With the addition of the new Studio Gang-designed building, our multi-year plan becomes a reality. Classrooms and studios for every program are now located together in San Francisco, offering even more cross-over opportunities for the talented artists and designers to learn from faculty—and each other. Our students now live, learn, eat, study, and relax on our residential campus, which includes two dorms, Founders Hall and Blattner Hall.

CCA’s innovative new building in San Francisco extends our main campus, featuring a dynamic, multi-layered hub of indoor-outdoor maker spaces, art studios, and social areas, connected by a terraced landscape offering stunning views and ample space for collaboration and creativity. The new building will offer::

  • Abundant shared green spaces
  • A continuous indoor-outdoor environment
  • Interactive maker yards
  • Adaptable spaces to create
  • New galleries for exhibitions
  • A new lecture hall
  • More opportunities for interdisciplinary learning

Sustainability at the forefront

Designed by a team led by award-winning architect Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang, the open, transparent design will connect our programs in exciting new ways. Built with sustainable features and amenities, the lower level of Double Ground includes shops, studios, and labs which open into shared maker yards. The upper level features a park-like atmosphere with green space and places to gather, adjacent to CCA's main campus building.

“As imagemakers we have sought to create an active role in creating exchanges of perspectives about art and culture; and how art engages with questions we face as a society today. Our experience as artists and academics have reaffirmed our belief that the arts have a crucial role to play in imagining new futures, especially in turbulent times such as these.” — Deborah Willis

We’re proud to award an honorary doctorate degree to inspirational artists, designers, and thinkers each year at our Commencement Ceremony. We were thrilled to have artist and scholar Deborah Willis and visual artist and CCA alum Hank Willis Thomas (MFA Photography and MA Visual Criticism 2003) as the degree recipients at our 117th Commencement Ceremony last weekend.

An advocate for all voices, Deborah Willis has been instrumental in furthering diversity and inclusion in the art world. Her work continues to inspire generations of artists, scholars, and educators, cementing her legacy as a leading figure in art history and visual studies.

Hank Willis Thomas’s work engages with historical and contemporary issues of social justice, drawing attention to systemic inequities and advocating for change. Like his mother, he is also recognized for his activism in nurturing diversity and inclusion in the art industry. Thomas’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the art world, provoking important conversations and reflections.

Congratulations, @debwillisphoto and #HankWillisThomas!
