California College of the Arts implements staff layoffs

California College of the Arts (CCA) has implemented staff layoffs, a necessary step in rightsizing the organization and to address its $20 million budget deficit for this fiscal year. In total, 23 employees were affected, comprising 10% of CCA’s current staff. In addition, CCA eliminated several currently open roles, comprising a further 4.5% of total staff positions; these roles will be reevaluated as part of the rightsizing process.
These layoffs are only one part of a larger series of strategic steps CCA has undertaken to address budget shortfalls. Other steps include an Academic Portfolio review, a new strategic enrollment plan, and targeted fundraising initiatives. Together with the rightsizing, these strategies are intended to stabilize the college’s finances and position CCA—the only nonprofit art and design school in the Bay Area—to thrive in today’s rapidly changing landscape.
